This factory for a Japanese company on the outskirts of Bangalore gave us a chance to look at some principles of Japanese architecture and experiment with using them in our building. The plan was to a typical pattern with the administrative building in the front and the factory at the rear. A pathway that led from the entrance to the factory was cut through by three oversize frame walls and courts were created in the spaces between. Each court was designed to give a different feel and the buildings sat like pavilions within the landscape.
This approach, along with the raised plinth, a predominance of horizontal lines, and the strong connection between built form and landscape were elements that we incorporated from Japanese architecture, while the courts and climate related elements connected to the architecture of India.
To highlight the industrial nature of the building, the scale was kept oversized with large walls and double height pergolas spanning the courts. The reception was designed as a glass box with an exposed steel structure, and a rugged grit used to finish the walls.
