Komet Technologies is a German company involved in precision tooling. When they approached us, the image they had in mind for their factory was an archetypal box, which was a reflection of their factory in Germany. In India, built space can be much more than a simple envelope and this tension between the ‘box’ and our attempt to break out of that mould, became the defining geometry of the design.
The factory building was planned as a long cuboid, and the reception a light glass box that jutted out prominently away from the built mass behind. This play between the rigid lines of the factory building and the ‘free spirited’ front portion was again reinforced by a frame that ran parallel to the cuboid and seemed to restrain the glass box within its confines. Internally, the skew created a covered courtyard which marked the transition between the office and the factory. A staircase to the first floor was suspended in this light filled space. The external geometry was reinforced in the interiors by linear patterns on the floor and false ceiling.
