The site was situated in one of the quiet suburbs of Bangalore and the clients were keen to retain the greenness of the site in more ways than this. They wanted a plan that would incorporate the landscaping within it and a method of construction that would be as natural as possible. The plan started with a courtyard, with the house wrapping around it so that living spaces looked onto it from every part of the house. We used hollow clay blocks for the walls and for the roof, a system of prestressed clay T-beams with hollow roof tiles.
Stylistically, the clients were keen on a traditional look, but the house itself assumed its final form quite naturally because of the materials used. And so, in its own way, the house managed to meld nature with built form, and the past with the present in a happy synergy.
